Some acquisitions arrive without names. Without provenance. Without claim.
Dates are often approximate. Lives rarely comply with calendars. When records disagree, both versions are retained.
The term wayward appears frequently in institutional documents. It is not a diagnosis. It is not a moral failing. It is a word used when compliance could not be extracted.
Several subjects resisted classification during their lives. This resistance has been respected. It is not the role of the museum to assign categories to our Waywards.
Not all materials survive. Absence is noted but not corrected.
Exhibits are not arranged chronologically. Order implies progress. The Museum does not.
Some visitors ask if the women know they are here.
